Your Bag Has a Weak Link: The Diagnostic That Finds It in 5 Rounds

TL;DROne club. One leak. One fix that's worth more than a season of range balls.

ATX Golf Performance··6 min read

Every amateur bag has exactly one club leaking 1.5 strokes or more per round. Find it, fix it, and you change your scoring average without touching your swing.

The 5-round diagnostic

Track every shot with a tracker or voice log. For each club, calculate: (total strokes lost with this club) ÷ (number of shots with this club). Sort the list. The bottom of the list is the weak link.

What the leak typically looks like

Reading this

The 4-iron is the weak link. It's used twice per round but loses 0.42 strokes every time. The 56° is the second leak — small numbers per shot but six shots a round. The driver, the obvious suspect, is fine.

Why this is the highest-leverage fix in golf

Modern tracking platforms — Arccos especially — built their entire club-fitting recommendation engines around this exact diagnostic because the signal is enormous and the fix is fast. There is no other improvement in golf where 30 minutes at a fitter, with data, returns 1.5 strokes per round. None.

FAQ

How do I find the weakest club in my bag?+

Track 5 rounds. Calculate SG-per-shot for each club. The club with the worst per-shot number (not total) is the weak link. It will almost always surprise you.

Is the weak link usually the driver?+

Rarely. Drivers leak total strokes due to volume of use, not per-shot inefficiency. The real weak links are typically a long iron, the 3-wood, or a specific wedge.

Can I fix a weak-link club without replacing it?+

Sometimes — a re-shaft or loft adjustment fixes 30% of cases. The other 70% are dispersion or distance gaps that a hybrid, wood, or different wedge bounce solves immediately.
