You miss greens short because you're using yardages you hit once a month for shots you take four times a round. Real carry distance is the one you produce 8 out of 10 times. Almost every amateur overestimates theirs by 8–15 yards.
Your real number vs your gut number

What missing short actually costs
- Short of the green in a bunker: adds 0.6–0.9 strokes vs a shot on the green.
- Short in a false-front collection area: often the same or worse than a bunker because the chip is delicate.
- Over the green: only 0.3–0.5 strokes worse than hitting the green — and often better than a short miss.
Read that last line again. Missing long is almost always cheaper than missing short.
How to find your real yardages

What not to do
- Don't practice by hitting your longest 7-iron on the range. The range ball flies further.
