Coach by ATX

Our story

We’ve been trying to understand golf performance for 30 years.

Coach by ATX didn’t start as an app. It started as a question a college golfer couldn’t answer with a scorecard — and thirty years of competitive golf, coaching and performance analytics spent chasing it down.

The beginning

A college golfer with a notebook

It started with handwritten statistics. As an All-American college golfer, Martin du Toit tracked every round by hand and mailed the numbers away to be analyzed, because there was no other way to answer the question that mattered: where are the shots actually going?

The scorecard said what he shot. It never said why.

Software

Building the analysis himself

When the available tools ran out, he built his own. Golf-statistics software designed to analyze elite junior and amateur golfers, used by coaches who needed to see a player's game clearly rather than guess at it.

That work made one thing obvious: better data helps, but only if someone can turn it into a decision.

Mobile

Analytics in every player's pocket

Golf analytics moved onto the phone, and with it came scale — competitive golfers, coaches and teams internationally using performance data round by round.

The dashboards got better. The core problem stayed: golfers still left the course unsure what to practice.

Coaching

ATX Golf Performance, Austin, Texas

Martin founded ATX Golf Performance as a working golf academy in Austin — launch monitors, high-speed video, 3D motion capture, force plates and putting technology, used every day with real golfers.

Coaching full time surfaced the missing link. The numbers pointed at a weakness; the conversation in the bay found the cause. Target selection. Intention. Decisions after a bad hole. Pressure. None of it lives on a scorecard.

AI + Voice

The coach that fits in a round

Voice made it possible to capture the story of a shot without slowing play down. AI made it possible to hear that story, connect it to strokes gained, and give a golfer one clear priority.

Coach by ATX is the result: thirty years of trying to understand golf performance, condensed into a coach you can talk to after every round.

Who we are today

ATX Golf Performance is a working coaching business in Austin — an indoor studio on Wild Basin Rd S, Austin, TX 78746 in Westlake, plus lessons across the city. Our coaches teach every day. That's where every opinion in this app and on this site comes from — real sessions with real amateur golfers, not marketing.

Why we built Coach by ATX

Our students would leave a lesson understanding what to work on that week, then play four rounds without a clear picture of whether it was working. Existing tracking apps either required expensive sensors or produced dashboards nobody acted on. Nothing pushed one small, specific thing to practice before the next round.

Coach by ATX is that missing piece: talk to your phone for ~10 seconds per hole, get honest Strokes Gained and a WHS-style handicap, and receive one weekly process goal pushed to you before your next tee time. It's the tool we wanted our students to have between lessons.

The Austin teaching lineage

Austin was a teaching town long before it was a tech one. Harvey Penick spent most of a century at Austin Country Club, and his method was almost aggressively simple: give a golfer one thought, let them own it, and don't hand them the second one until the first is theirs. He kept his observations in a red notebook rather than a system, and he taught the player in front of him instead of a swing model.

That's the philosophy Coach by ATX runs on. Every round ends with one process goal — not a report card and not nine things to fix. The Strokes Gained engine decides which single thought is worth the most shots to you right now, and that's the only one you get before your next tee time.

What we believe about improvement

  • Most amateurs practice the wrong things because they don't measure the right things.
  • One clear weekly goal beats twelve vague ones.
  • Strokes Gained is the only stat that answers "what is actually costing me shots?"
  • A coach in your pocket doesn't replace a real coach — it makes your time with one dramatically more useful.

The studio

There's a real room behind this app.

Coach by ATX was written in a coaching studio off Wild Basin Road, between lessons. The questions the app asks you after a round are the same ones our coaches ask across the hitting bay — because that's where they were written down.
