Why Am I Losing Strokes on Approach Shots? (Diagnostic Tree)

TL;DRApproach play is the biggest lever in amateur golf. Fixing it starts with knowing why you're missing.

Approach play has four failure modes. Identify which one is yours and you've cut your practice work by 75%.

The 4-question diagnostic

  1. Do your misses cluster on one side? → Aim problem. Cheap to fix.
  2. Are most misses short? → Distance problem. Track real carry per club, club up.
  3. Are misses spraying both sides + short? → Strike problem. You need a coach and video.
  4. Are misses mostly short-side of the pin? → Strategy problem. Stop aiming at pins.

Fix #1 — Aim

Set an alignment stick at every range session for two weeks. Aim the stick at a specific target, set your feet to the stick, then look up. You'll be shocked how often your "aim" is 10° off. Misses will start clustering around the target rather than left or right of it.

Fix #2 — Distance

Most amateurs play their 7-iron at "150" because that's what the bag says. Real carry distance is closer to 138 for a 10 handicap. Spend one range session noting actual carry per club (a launch monitor at any indoor facility takes 20 minutes). Use those numbers, not the bag numbers.

Fix #3 — Strike

Strike problems show up as wild dispersion both directions plus short. There is no shortcut here — you need eyes on your swing. Book a lesson. Bring your data.

Fix #4 — Strategy

Aim at the fattest part of the green every single time. Decoy Bay Hill pin? Middle. Tucked back-right Sunday flag? Middle. Approach SG climbs ~0.5 strokes per round for most 10–15 handicaps when they stop firing at pins.

FAQ

Why do I keep missing greens to one side?+

Almost always aim. Amateurs who consistently miss right have an aim bias of 5–8 degrees right of target. A simple alignment stick on the range fixes this in two sessions.

Why are my approach shots short?+

Two reasons: you're using book yardage instead of carry yardage (book yardage is total, which assumes roll), and you're underclubbing under pressure. Track real carry, club up.
