Where to Practice in Austin: A Ranked Range Guide

TL;DRHank Haney was wrong about a lot, but he was right about this: where you practice shapes how you practice.

Austin's range scene is uneven. Some facilities are top tier; some will groove a bad pattern into your swing. Here's where to spend your hour.

Best for full-swing work

  • Avery Ranch — Grass tees, real distance, target greens. The only true range in north Austin.
  • Grey Rock — Big, open, multiple targets. Mats only on most days.
  • Topgolf (Domain) — Bad for swing work, good for casual fun. Not a substitute for a real range.

Best short-game areas

  • Lions Municipal — Underrated short-game green with bunkers. Free if you're playing.
  • Butler Pitch and Putt — The single best 60-yards-and-in practice in central Texas.
  • Hancock Golf Course — Walkable 9-hole that doubles as on-course wedge practice.

Stop guessing what to work on.
