Eliminate Doubles First: The Only Scoring Strategy That Works for Amateurs

TL;DRAn 85 is not a round full of pars. It is a round with zero doubles.

Birdies are bonuses. Doubles are the leak. The fastest path from 90 to 80 has nothing to do with hitting more greens — it has everything to do with eliminating the holes that cost two strokes at once.

The three rules that kill doubles

Rule 1: Never hit driver when bogey is the score. If you are playing for bogey on a par 4, a 200-yard tee shot in play beats a 240-yard tee shot that might be lost. The math is not close.

Rule 2: Always aim to the fat side of the green from the rough. Short-sided up-and-down rate from greenside rough is under 20% for amateurs. Long-sided rate is over 40%. Same shot, double the success.

Rule 3: Punch out, every time, with no exceptions. The hero shot through a tree gap saves one stroke when it works and costs three when it doesn't. The expected value is negative across every published amateur dataset.

FAQ

What causes most double bogeys for amateurs?+

Three sources: penalty strokes off the tee, short-siding chips into greenside rough, and three-putts from outside 30 feet. Strategy fixes the first two before any technique change is needed.

How many doubles does a 15 handicap make per round?+

On average, 3.2 doubles or worse per round. Cutting that to 1 drops the score from 87 to 82, with zero new birdies required.

Is it possible to shoot in the 70s without birdies?+

Yes. Pars and bogeys with zero doubles equals 80. Add any two birdies and you're in the 70s. The math does not require a single hero shot.
