Fairways Hit: How Much Does It Actually Matter?
TL;DRHitting more fairways helps. Just not nearly as much as your buddy thinks.
If you took two amateurs of the same handicap and one hit 2 more fairways per round than the other, the score difference would be roughly 0.4 strokes. That's it. Approach distance matters far more than fairway-or-rough.
The data
| Stat | Worst amateur tier loses… |
|---|---|
| Driving distance (20 yds short) | 1.2 strokes |
| Fairways hit (3 fewer) | 0.6 strokes |
| Approach proximity (10 ft longer avg) | 3.1 strokes |
| Putts per round (+2) | 2.0 strokes |

Why the rough isn't as bad as you think
From 150 yards, a tour pro hits the green 70% of the time from the fairway and 60% from the rough — a 10-point gap. For a 10 handicap, the gap is closer to 5 points. Distance to the green dominates lie almost every time.
