The World Handicap System formula is public. Any app that runs the exact math, using current course rating and slope, produces the same number GHIN would. The differences that appear are small and predictable.
Where the math is identical
- Score differential formula: (113 / Slope) × (AGS − Course Rating).
- Net double bogey cap applied per hole.
- Best 8 differentials from your last 20 rounds, × 0.96.
- Course rating and slope lookups for each set of tees.
Where small differences appear
- Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC). On days where scoring is significantly higher or lower than expected, GHIN applies an adjustment. A calculator that skips PCC will drift on those days.
- Timing of round posting. GHIN's revisions happen daily; different apps may recalculate at different times. Your visible index can lag by a day.
- Course data updates. When tees or ratings change, GHIN's records update on a schedule. Third-party apps may be a few weeks behind.
When "official" actually matters
You need a GHIN index for:
- USGA-sanctioned tournaments
- Club championships
- Member-guest events that require verified handicaps
- Some interstate and league play
For everything else — knowing where your game is, tracking improvement, betting with friends, comparing yourself to benchmarks — an unofficial WHS-style index does the identical job.
