Bunker Shots for the Terrified Amateur

TL;DRThe bunker doesn't hate you. You're just trying to hit the ball instead of the sand.

The bunker shot is the only swing in golf where you intentionally hit behind the ball. Once you accept that, everything else gets easier.

The three fundamentals

  • Open the face first, then grip — not the other way around. The face stays open through impact.
  • Draw a line in the sand — aim 2 inches behind the ball. Hit the line, not the ball.
  • Finish your swing — most failed bunker shots are deceleration. Full follow-through, every time.

The escape-only version

If you genuinely just want out, swing harder than feels reasonable and aim for the high lip, not the flag. The ball will pop out and roll — accept 30 feet from the hole. Beats a second bunker shot.
