Avery Ranch Strategy Guide: How to Score on Austin's Trickiest Layout
TL;DRTight corridors, elevation, and water you can't see from the tee. Aim small.

Avery Ranch is the most strategic course on the north side. It doesn't ask for distance — it asks for the right miss. Pick the safe side off every tee and the round gets a lot shorter.
The two rules that work here
- Miss away from water — Avery's hazards are short and right on most holes. A 30-yard miss left almost always plays.
- Club down off the tee — 3-wood or hybrid keeps you in play on 7 of the 14 driving holes. The 20 yards you "lose" you give back at the green.
Where rounds die
Holes 7, 12, and 18 cost more strokes than the rest combined. All three reward a conservative tee shot to the wide side and a middle-of-green approach. Play them in three pars and you've already saved the round.
Stop guessing what to work on.
